Tanzania advances major LNG and port infrastructure projects

Tanzania is advancing major energy and maritime infrastructure projects to bolster its role as a regional economic hub. The Tanzania LNG project aims to develop offshore gas reserves, potentially involving an investment of approximately $42 billion. The project seeks to utilize over 47 trillion cubic feet of discovered natural gas to produce between 10 and 15 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually via a facility near Lindi.

Simultaneously, modernization efforts are underway at the Port of Dar es Salaam. Egyptian construction firm EDECS has commenced work to upgrade Terminal 1 under a contract awarded by DP World. The project includes constructing cargo-handling yards and installing new digital systems and infrastructure. These upgrades aim to increase capacity and reduce vessel waiting times from five days to 24 hours. This follows a period of significant growth, with the port handling 33.7 million tonnes during the 2025/26 financial year.
