Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange sees rapid growth in market capitalization
Tanzania’s capital markets are experiencing a period of significant expansion, characterized by rapid growth in market capitalization and increased participation from younger investors. In the first half of 2026, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) reported market capitalization of TZS 35.18 trillion, a 79.11% increase year-on-year. Equity turnover also saw a substantial rise, reaching TZS 1.068 trillion, which exceeds the full-year 2025 level by 61.94%.
This growth is being driven by both institutional developments and a shift in retail investor behavior. There is a rising trend among young Tanzanians to utilize capital markets, including treasury bonds, shares, and dividends, as a means to achieve financial independence and diversify income. This shift is supported by increased financial literacy and the availability of digital tools like the Hisa Kiganjani mobile trading platform.
To further expand the market, the DSE is working to attract telecommunications, mining, and state-owned companies to the exchange. Efforts are also underway to integrate African capital markets and open Treasury bills and bonds to international investors. The exchange is also diversifying its product range through the development of Sukuk, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).
