Dar Młodzieży returns to Gdynia after historic Atlantic voyage
The sailing ship Dar Młodzieży has returned to its home port in Gdynia, Poland, following a five-month expedition that covered 12,000 nautical miles and included two Atlantic crossings.
Launched on April 16, the voyage served as a training mission for students from Gdynia Maritime University. A primary objective was representing Poland during the 250th anniversary of the United States, which included participating in a major parade on the Hudson River in New York. The ship's route included stops in Cadiz, the Bahamas, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Ship commander Michał Sadowski described the journey as a rare event, noting that such a voyage occurs once in every two generations. Despite challenges such as extreme heat and air conditioning failures during the Atlantic crossing, the crew successfully navigated the vessel using sails. The Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Prof. Adam Weintrit, noted the historical significance of the mission, while suggesting this may be the final long-distance voyage for this specific vessel.
