Daraya hosts screening of ‘Little Gandhi’ documentary honoring activist Ghassan Matar
The documentary film ‘Little Gandhi’, directed by Sam Kadi, was screened in Daraya at the municipal stadium. The screening, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, commemorates the life of activist Ghassan Matar.
Matar, known internationally as ‘Little Gandhi’, became a symbol of the early Syrian peaceful movement for his efforts to offer flowers and water to security forces during protests. The film, originally released in 2016, documents his experience and the broader peaceful struggle of a generation. The production was completed under high-risk conditions, including shelling and chemical threats.
Matar was arrested by security forces in September 2011 and died shortly after under circumstances showing signs of torture. The screening serves as a way to preserve the collective memory of Daraya and the peaceful origins of the movement.
