Darcy Ribeiro's cultural legacy celebrated in Maricá and Montes Claros

Cultural celebrations honoring the legacy of anthropologist and educator Darcy Ribeiro have taken place in both Maricá and Montes Claros.

In Maricá, the Museu Casa Darcy Ribeiro hosted a special program for Popular Culture Day. Organized by the Maricá Culture and Tourism Company (MARÉ), the event featured discussions with writer Luiz Antônio Simas, performances by the Rio Maracatu group, the Boi Kunhã Geledés procession, and Carimbó music. The activities aimed to reinforce the museum as a center for memory and cultural exchange.

In Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Rayane Dumont, the drum queen of the samba school União de Maricá, participated in the traditional Festas de Agosto. The visit focused on exploring the local traditions that shaped Darcy Ribeiro’s childhood. The samba school intends to honor Ribeiro during the Carnival at Marquês de Sapucaí, using these cultural roots to provide context for his life and contributions to Brazilian culture.
