Darializa Ávila Chevalier's radical proposals alarm New York District 13 voters

Voters in New York City's District 13 – a borough of 778,141 residents, about 51% Hispanic and 84% U.S. citizens – say they are frightened by the platform of congressional candidate Darializa Ávila Chevalier. The Muslim activist, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, is challenging incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the June 23 Democratic primary.

Ávila Chevalier's past social‑media posts, recovered by CNN, call for the abolition of police, prisons and borders, the end of deportations, the expropriation of private property and the nationalisation of major industries. She also advocated suspending rent and mortgage payments, cancelling private health‑insurance companies and confiscating large corporations. The posts included vulgar attacks on Democratic leaders and labelled President Joe Biden a “rapist” and a “war criminal.” The controversy has sparked public outcry among District 13 residents.
