Brazil secures US$ 1 billion IDB credit for Eco Invest Brasil

Brazil has been authorized to secure up to US$ 1 billion in external credit from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to fund the Eco Invest Brasil initiative. This program, coordinated by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, is a central component of the government's Ecological Transformation Plan.

The funding aims to accelerate the country's ecological transition and attract foreign private investment by improving institutional and regulatory conditions. A key mechanism of the program is the use of currency hedging to mitigate market risks for international investors. The initiative utilizes a blended finance model, combining public and private resources through catalytic capital to leverage conventional investments.

Projected impacts include supporting circular economy initiatives that could benefit over 2 million people in the Northeast, Southeast, and South regions. Specific energy projects include the construction of a biorefinery in Bahia for renewable diesel and SAF production. Additionally, the funds will support climate adaptation through the modernization of electrical grids in São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Bahia to prevent power disruptions during extreme weather events.
