Dario Safina targeted by AI-generated disinformation campaign

Sicilian regional deputy Dario Safina has reported being a victim of a targeted disinformation campaign using artificial intelligence. A social media post utilized AI-generated imagery to depict Safina in a Guantanamo-style orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, accompanied by text suggesting the image was intended to be humorous despite his innocence.

Safina, a member of the Democratic Party, described the incident as a “devastating” act of media violence designed to distort reality and destroy human dignity. He noted the impact is profound on personal, emotional, and professional levels. This incident follows a similar case involving Undersecretary of State Matilde Siracusano, who was targeted by AI-generated sexist imagery. Regional President Renato Schifani has characterized such occurrences as “grave and unacceptable.”
