Darius Miles: Petition seeks release of former Alabama player awaiting trial

Supporters of former University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles have launched a petition calling for his release after he spent more than three years in jail awaiting trial. Miles was arrested in connection with a January 2023 shooting that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris.

Prosecutors allege that Miles provided a handgun to Michael Lynn Davis, who used the weapon during a confrontation with Harris and her boyfriend. Davis was convicted of capital murder in May 2025 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Miles, however, remains incarcerated while facing his own capital murder charge.

His aunt, Melissa Miles, initiated a Change.org petition titled ‘Bring Darius Miles Home: End Unjust Pretrial Detention’ and a campaign called ‘25 BY 25.’ The campaign seeks to collect 25,000 signatures to secure his release before his 25th birthday on October 6, 2026. The petition argues that his prolonged detention without a conviction reflects systemic issues within the justice system.
