Dariusz Stola compares UPA to Polish nationalist groups

Dariusz Stola, the director of the POLIN Museum, has drawn comparisons between the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and certain Polish nationalist organizations, specifically the National Armed Forces (NSZ) and the National Radical Camp (ONR). During a television appearance, Stola stated that these Polish groups had a ‘very similar program’ to the UPA, noting that they were ‘enemies of democracy and enemies of national minorities.’

Stola remarked that expecting Ukrainians to engage in a serious reckoning with the UPA's legacy while the war is ongoing is ‘unrealistic.’ He suggested that while these historical debates are complex and long-standing, Poland would approach the issue with Ukraine approximately three months after the conclusion of the war. He characterized the UPA as having chosen heroes that would not be considered ‘good heroes’ for a Polish military unit due to their historical stances.
