Dark chocolate and cocoa linked to mood and antioxidant benefits

Research suggests that cocoa-rich products, such as dark chocolate, may offer short-term benefits for mood. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition indicated that cocoa-rich consumption was associated with improvements in positive and negative affect, as well as potential reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, researchers noted that more studies are required due to small participant numbers and short trial durations, and emphasized that dark chocolate is not a medical treatment for mental health conditions.

Dark chocolate is distinguished from milk chocolate by its higher proportion of cocoa solids. High-percentage dark chocolate, such as varieties containing at least 85% cocoa, typically contains significantly less added sugar. Cocoa is a rich source of antioxidants, specifically polyphenols, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. The fermentation process used in cocoa production can make these polyphenols more bioavailable, allowing the body to absorb them more easily.
