Dark chocolate offers potential heart and brain health benefits

Experts in nutrition and cardiology suggest that high-percentage dark chocolate can offer various health benefits, provided it is low in sugar and high in cocoa content. Key compounds such as flavonoids, magnesium, tryptophan, and theobromine are central to these advantages.

Nutritionist Paula Martín Clares notes that flavonoids act as antioxidants that improve cerebral blood flow and protect neurons. Magnesium aids muscle relaxation and nervous system stability, while tryptophan assists in serotonin production. Additionally, theobromine acts as a mild stimulant that can improve concentration and mental energy without causing nervousness.

Cardiologist Aurelio Rojas highlights that consuming 85% dark chocolate may increase gut microbiota diversity. He also references a meta-analysis indicating that cocoa consumption can lead to lower fasting blood glucose levels, particularly in individuals at metabolic risk. Furthermore, studies involving older adults showed that flavonoid extracts could reduce certain markers of inflammation.
