LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detects potential dark matter signal
The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, located 1.6 kilometers underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, has recorded a single, unexplained particle interaction that may provide the first hint of dark matter. The event, observed during an analysis of 220 days of data collected between March 2023 and April 2024, involved a potential collision between a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) and a xenon atom.
While the signal is considered the most compelling hint of dark matter reported by the experiment to date, researchers emphasize that it does not yet constitute a formal discovery. The statistical significance of the event is 2.6 sigma, which falls below the 5-sigma threshold required by the physics community to claim a definitive discovery. The interaction produced a faint flash of ultraviolet light and a nuclear recoil that researchers have struggled to explain using known background processes.
The LZ experiment is an international collaboration of 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions, managed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. Scientists are now conducting further analysis and awaiting more data to determine if the signal is a breakthrough in understanding the substance that makes up approximately 85 percent of the universe's mass.
