The emergence of the darknet has fundamentally altered the landscape of the illegal drug trade. Operating much like legitimate e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, these digital marketplaces facilitate the sale of substances including marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy.

A pivotal turning point occurred in February 2011 with the rise of Silk Road. This platform utilized the Tor browser to ensure anonymity and Bitcoin to facilitate untraceable transactions, allowing users to buy and sell drugs with perceived minimal risk. Researchers are now using these digital hubs to gather data on supply and demand, as well as to study the impact of law enforcement interventions on these markets.
