Dominican Republic protests after police killing of 19‑year‑old Darlin Mercado in Herrera

On 3 July, 19‑year‑old Darlin Mercado Reyes was shot dead by a National Police officer in the Herrera neighbourhood of Santo Domingo. The incident has triggered a wave of protests and marches across the capital, with hundreds gathering in Herrera and San Francisco de Macorís demanding justice and accountability.

The ruling PLD party and former president Leonel Fernández have called the killing evidence of the failure of recent police‑reform efforts. The public prosecutor has filed a request for coercion against the officer, seeking 12 months of preventive detention.
