Darling Causeway to implement mobile speed cameras

Mobile speed cameras have been approved for use on the Darling Causeway to address speeding and unsafe driving behavior. The decision follows a significant increase in traffic on the route, which serves as a detour for the Great Western Highway while Victoria Pass remains closed for repairs.

Transport for NSW and NSW Police have collaborated to manage the detour route, which has seen increased use by heavy vehicles traveling between Sydney and the Central West of New South Wales. While most drivers have adhered to safety standards, officials noted that a small percentage continue to take unacceptable risks.

The NSW Government has allocated $50 million to improve the resilience of the detour route, including upgrades to pavement, shoulders, and safety measures. Mobile speed cameras will be clearly signposted when in operation to deter speeding. Authorities also reminded motorists that mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras remain active throughout the Blue Mountains and western regions.
