Darlington groups challenge relief road consultation

Environmental and neighbourhood groups in Darlington have filed a formal complaint against the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Mayor Baron Houchen regarding the public consultation for the proposed Darlington Northern Relief Road.

Critics argue the consultation process is “inadequately vague,” claiming that provided mapping lacks the necessary detail—such as property boundaries, street names, or land plots—to allow residents to make informed comments. The groups express concern that the shortlisted road routes may threaten the peace and tranquility of the Skerningham Garden Village, a development project intended to provide between 4,500 and 10,000 new homes designed as a walkable and cyclable community.

Local representatives and community organisations contend that the current documentation fails to show whether the proposed routes run through existing homes, gardens, or community spaces, potentially violating legal requirements for meaningful public engagement.
