Christopher Bell wins Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway
Christopher Bell won the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, marking his first victory of the 2026 season and ending a 33-race winless streak. Bell, driving the No. 20 Toyota, overtook race leader Kyle Larson with 12 laps remaining to secure the win. Ty Gibbs finished second, followed by Tyler Reddick in third, Ryan Blaney in fourth, and Kyle Larson in fifth.
The race served as the opening event for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, known as The Chase. While Bell’s victory moved him to second in the championship standings, Denny Hamlin remains the points leader despite finishing 18th. Other notable playoff struggles included William Byron, who suffered an engine failure and finished 37th, and Ryan Blaney, who finished fourth.
Earlier in the weekend, severe weather and lightning forced NASCAR to cancel both practice and qualifying sessions. As a result, the starting lineup was determined by the NASCAR rulebook, which placed Tyler Reddick on the pole position based on a performance metric involving recent race results and owner standings.
