Darmstadt implements heat protection measures for urban spaces and schools

The city of Darmstadt is implementing various measures to combat rising temperatures and improve climate adaptation. As part of an interdisciplinary project, students from the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) have constructed a heat protection pavilion on the Theaterwiese. The five-meter-high structure uses water mist to cool the immediate surroundings through evaporation, providing a temporary social space for citizens during extreme heat.

In addition to urban cooling structures, city officials have agreed on a strategy to protect schools and daycare centers from heat. To mitigate health risks and maintain educational quality, the city plans to install blinds, UV-protective films, and LED lighting to reduce heat generation. Long-term structural solutions being considered include the installation of heat pumps, the use of reflective roof colors, solar panels, and the greening of facades and roofs to improve the local microclimate.
