Darmstadt Mayor halts Mathildenhöhe visitor center construction
Darmstadt Mayor Hanno Benz has announced a halt to construction work on the Mathildenhöhe visitor center project. The decision, made alongside Urban Planning Commissioner Paul Georg Wandrey, stems from a lack of a finalized concept regarding how to present the Art Nouveau UNESCO World Heritage site to students and tourists, including digital integration and the center's necessary scale.
The Green Party (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN) has criticized the move, accusing the Mayor of failing to provide a viable usage concept during his three years in office despite previously campaigning for the project. Party spokesperson Hildegard Förster-Heldmann stated that the issues cited for the halt have been known for years and criticized the lack of transparency and communication with the cultural committee and private donors, such as the Merck family.
Conversely, the initiative ‘Osthang bleibt’, which opposed the new construction on the eastern slope, welcomed the decision as positive news for the Mathildenhöhe landscape and local culture.
