Daron Acemoglu warns H-1B program may weaken US education

Nobel Prize-winning MIT economist Daron Acemoglu has warned that heavy reliance on the H-1B visa program may be undermining the United States' commitment to domestic education. In a discussion with economist Tyler Cowen, Acemoglu argued that the ability to import skilled foreign workers—including programmers, doctors, and nurses—allows policymakers and business leaders to bypass the necessary work of addressing weaknesses in the American K-12 and STEM education systems.

Acemoglu expressed concern that the availability of foreign talent reduces the incentive to invest in the human capital of American students, noting that many youths are currently performing below grade-level standards in reading and writing. He suggested that while the country is spending money on education, it is failing to address root causes because the 'educated elite' believes skill gaps can simply be filled through immigration rather than domestic development.
