Daron Acemoğlu warns AI development threatens democracy and labor markets

Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoğlu has warned that current trends in artificial intelligence development could threaten liberal democracy. Speaking to Der Spiegel, the MIT professor argued that the concentration of economic and digital power within Silicon Valley has turned the region into an anti-democratic force, posing a challenge to democratic decision-making processes.

Acemoğlu also highlighted risks to the labor market, noting that even countries like Germany, which have historically been resilient to automation-driven job losses, are approaching a period of significant structural change. He urged policymakers to prepare for these shifts.

Complementing these systemic concerns, research highlighted in the Harvard Business Review describes a phenomenon termed ‘AI Brain Fry.’ This refers to mental exhaustion caused by ‘cognitive offloading,’ where users attempt to manage excessive AI-driven tasks. While AI increases productivity, the resulting cognitive overload can lead to mental fog, concentration issues, and decision-making difficulties for human workers.
