Darrell Waltrip diagnosed with brain disease, stepping away from public life

NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and broadcaster Darrell Waltrip has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), complicated by possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). His family announced the news on Wednesday, stating the condition is likely linked to injuries sustained during his 29-year racing career.

Waltrip, 79, is stepping away from the public limelight due to the progressive nature of the disease. While the condition will inevitably advance, his family noted that it is currently limited to minor noticeable symptoms and that he remains happy and healthy, spending time with his wife, Stevie, and their family.

A three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion with 84 career victories, Waltrip was a dominant figure in the sport from 1972 to 2000. He later became a prominent analyst for FOX Sports from 2001 to 2019, where he was well known for his signature catchphrase, ‘Boogity! Boogity! Boogity!’
