Dartmouth Provost Santiago Schnell resigns over undisclosed AI use
Santiago Schnell has resigned as Provost of Dartmouth College following a faculty-led investigation into his use of artificial intelligence. The review determined that Schnell used AI to meaningfully alter his writing and failed to disclose this use in several publications, including academic papers and an opinion piece for The Washington Post.
The investigation, which reviewed university AI logs and emails, concluded that Schnell’s actions violated publication disclosure requirements and fell short of the institution’s ethics and professionalism standards. While Schnell maintained that AI did not substitute for his intellectual judgment or authorship, reports from The Dartmouth indicated that AI detection tools flagged a significant portion of his recent work as AI-generated.
Dartmouth President Sian Leah Beilock announced the resignation, stating it was Schnell’s decision made out of respect for his colleagues and the institution. Matthew Delmont will serve as interim provost until June 2028.
