Darwin City Council denies Christian group pageant participation

The City of Darwin has rejected an application from the 'March for Jesus' group to participate in the upcoming Christmas pageant scheduled for November 14. The council stated the decision followed feedback from the 2025 event, citing concerns regarding the "nature and volume of chanting" and the distribution of "promotional merchandise."

Chief Executive Simone Saunders defended the move, noting that the group's behavior was deemed "overbearing, intimidating and confronting" and not aligned with the inclusive, family-oriented spirit of the pageant. Reports indicated that during the previous event, merchandise was reportedly refused and thrown at a child.

The Australian Christian Lobby has criticized the decision as "bizarre" and discriminatory, arguing that the group was simply sharing the gospel and distributing Bible literature rather than promotional items. Group members expressed shock at the ban, maintaining that their activities are central to the celebration of Christmas.
