Darwin man charged in alleged Islamophobic attack

A 53-year-old man has been charged with Commonwealth offences following an alleged Islamophobic attack on a family in Darwin. The incident, which occurred on June 7, reportedly targeted a man, a young child, and a pregnant woman.

Following an arrest by detectives, the Northern Territory firearms enforcement unit, and the Joint Counter Terrorism Team, police seized the suspect's firearms and suspended his firearms licence. The man faces two counts of threatening force or violence against a person ‘due to protected group status causing fear to that group’.

NT Police Acting Commander Robert Griffiths stated that the community will not tolerate conduct targeting individuals based on race, religion, or cultural background. The suspect has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on October 1.
