Darwin's YiSSA homeless shelter closure sparks federal criticism

The closure of the YiSSA Homeless and Short Stay Facility in Darwin has sparked significant political backlash following the Northern Territory government's decision to reject a federal funding offer. The facility, which provided 400 beds, was slated for closure after the territory government declined a $3.5 million to $6.5 million offer to purchase the site's demountables.

Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy criticized the decision as “heartless” and a “deep day of shame,” warning that the closure forces vulnerable residents to sleep rough or return to unsafe domestic situations. Concerns have also been raised regarding the relocation of residents to Batchelor, a small community 100km from Darwin with limited medical services and policing. While NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro defended the move by labeling the facility a “waste of money,” health officials are reportedly working to secure accommodation for dialysis patients near Darwin.
