Dashtgard Prison faces severe overcrowding and human rights concerns
The Iran Human Rights group has issued a report expressing grave concern over the unbearable conditions at Dashtgard Prison in Isfahan. The report highlights severe overcrowding, noting that the prison currently holds an estimated 10,000 inmates despite a standard capacity of only 4,000 to 5,000. This discrepancy has led to widespread lack of beds, forcing many prisoners to sleep on the floor.
In addition to overcrowding, the report details several systemic issues, including poor food quality, lack of adequate light and ventilation, and limited access to clothing and medical services. Prisoners face restrictions on communicating with their families and legal counsel. The report also alleges physical abuse, humiliating treatment, and psychological pressure used to extract confessions.
Specific concerns were raised regarding political and security prisoners, who reportedly face psychological pressure and are sometimes coerced into acting as informants for security agencies after their release. The report further notes that medical care is often withheld following physical altercations, with some reports indicating serious injuries and even deaths resulting from such treatment.
