Turkey earthquake insurance rates reach 58 percent amid seismic risk FAST-MOVING

On the 27th anniversary of the 1999 Marmara earthquake, data from the Natural Disaster Insurance Institution (DASK) reveals that approximately half of the homes in Turkey lack mandatory earthquake insurance. The national insurance rate currently stands at 58 percent, covering 11,700,223 homes. Regional coverage varies significantly: the Marmara region has the highest rate at 65 percent, followed by Eastern Anatolia (64 percent) and Southeast Anatolia (63 percent), while the Black Sea region has the lowest at 45 percent.

DASK reported that since its inception in 2000, it has handled 867,275 damage reports following 1,397 damaging earthquakes. The year 2023 saw a peak in activity with 653,081 claims, largely due to the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. Following those disasters, DASK paid 39 billion lira in damages within a nine-month period.

In response to ongoing seismic risks, various municipalities and organizations are emphasizing disaster preparedness. In Bursa, new investments in search and rescue training and firefighting fleets have been inaugurated. In Istanbul, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change reported that 1,007,000 independent units have completed urban transformation, while 291,000 are ongoing. Experts and geologists continue to warn of the necessity for resilient urban planning and scientific micro-zoning to mitigate future catastrophes.
