Data backup strategies face rising threats from ransomware and technical complexity

Traditional data protection strategies are facing new challenges due to evolving ransomware tactics and the technical complexities of modern server environments.

Experts warn that the long-standing 3-2-1 backup rule—maintaining three copies of data on two different media with one offsite—is no longer sufficient against modern cyberattacks. Ransomware actors now specifically target backups to prevent organizations from restoring data without paying a ransom. If backups are network-accessible and reachable from a compromised network, they become targets rather than layers of protection. In many recovery cases, attackers have successfully deleted or encrypted backups by compromising administrative credentials and backup management software.

Additionally, technical limitations in server environments, such as Microsoft Exchange Server, complicate recovery efforts. Even when backups exist, meeting Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) can be difficult due to the time required to restore large databases and perform necessary integrity checks. Gaps between backup intervals can also lead to significant data loss, creating compliance and business risks.
