Data backup technologies evolve to counter ransomware and optimize storage
Data backup strategies are increasingly focused on security and ransomware countermeasures. Microsoft Azure offers specialized tools to prevent attackers from deleting or encrypting backups, utilizing Recovery Services vaults and Backup vaults. These systems allow for tiered policy designs based on data criticality, geo-redundant storage, and cross-region restoration to ensure disaster recovery capabilities.
In the open-source sector, different tools employ varying methods for storage, deduplication, and encryption. Bareos and Bacula utilize external storage systems for deduplication, with Bacula Enterprise offering global endpoint deduplication as a commercial feature. Conversely, Proxmox Backup Server integrates deduplication and compression directly into its datastore architecture by splitting backups into chunks. Other tools, such as Restic and BorgBackup, focus on deduplicated and encrypted repositories.
