Data becomes the primary differentiator for AI EdTech products
In the evolving EdTech landscape, the competitive advantage of artificial intelligence products is shifting away from the underlying AI models themselves. As frontier models and open-source alternatives converge in performance, the model no longer serves as a primary differentiator.
Data from Stanford’s 2026 AI Index indicates that the performance gap between top frontier models and open-source alternatives shrank from approximately 8 percent in 2025 to roughly 1.7 percent in 2026. Additionally, open-source models are increasingly available at a fraction of the cost of frontier systems.
Furthermore, an enterprise AI report from a16z shows that 81 percent of enterprises now utilize three or more model families simultaneously, up from 68 percent the previous year. This trend suggests that companies are moving away from single-model commitments, making proprietary data the most significant competitive moat in the industry.
