Data center and energy infrastructure projects expand in US and Canada
Major data center and energy infrastructure projects are advancing in both the United States and Canada to meet rising electricity demands.
In Louisiana, NextEra Energy Capital Holdings has proposed the Steamboat Energy Storage project in Livingston Parish. The 500-megawatt battery storage system has been selected for an expedited review process by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). The project is intended to support an unidentified commercial entity requiring between 330 and 360 MW of capacity, fueling speculation regarding the arrival of a large-scale hyperscale or AI-focused data center in the region.
In Nova Scotia, Canada, EverWind has announced plans for a $10 billion private investment. The proposal includes an $8 billion data center campus at the Point Tupper industrial site and $2 billion dedicated to advancing the company’s onshore wind power portfolio. While Richmond County officials expressed optimism regarding job creation and tax revenue, local concerns remain regarding water utility impacts and potential increases in power rates.
