Data center boom threatens skilled trades and housing

The rapid expansion of data center infrastructure is creating significant labor shortages in the residential construction and skilled trades sectors across the United States and Australia.

In the United States, advocates warn that the surge in artificial intelligence-driven data center projects is drawing skilled tradespeople away from home building. Ed Brady, CEO of the Home Builders Institute, noted that the industry is already facing a shortage of approximately 300,000 workers. He highlighted that workers are moving to data center projects where they can see pay increases of 25% to 30%, exacerbating a decade-long decline in the housing trades workforce.

Similarly, in Victoria, Australia, the National Electrical and Communications Association has warned that the recruitment of apprentice electricians for data centers threatens to stall residential, energy, and infrastructure projects. The group expressed concern that major data center projects are recruiting apprentices trained by small and medium-sized electrical contractors without contributing to new apprenticeship commencements, which fails to increase the overall workforce capacity.
