Data center construction faces rising public opposition in the United States

Data center construction is facing significant public opposition in the United States, driven by concerns over energy costs, environmental impact, and resource consumption. According to Gallup, 70% of Americans oppose building AI-focused data centers in their local areas. Pew Research indicates that 67% of American adults are anxious about rising home energy costs, while 63% are concerned about environmental harm. Other localized concerns include noise, property values, and water usage in water-stressed regions.

In the U.S., approximately 75 data center projects valued at $130 billion have been delayed or blocked. Analysts suggest the backlash stems from a perceived loss of community agency and poor engagement from the companies involved.

In contrast, significant controversy over data center proliferation has not been observed in Asian digital hubs such as China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. While the U.S. and China host more than 90% of specialized AI computing capacity, the public response to infrastructure buildout remains geographically divided.
