Data center energy demand drives fuel cell research and global investment shifts

Researchers at the University of Washington, led by Professor Gang Wu, have made advancements in developing improved low-temperature hydrogen fuel cells. Using platinum as a catalyst, this technology could allow data centers to convert hydrogen and other fuels directly into electricity, potentially reducing their reliance on the electrical grid.

This development comes as data center energy demand rises significantly. In the United States, data centers are projected to consume up to 9% of annual electricity generation by 2030, up from 4% in 2023.

Meanwhile, the political landscape for data centers is shifting. While the United States faces growing public resistance to data center construction due to concerns over electricity, water usage, noise, and infrastructure costs, the Argentine government under Javier Milei is actively seeking to attract these investments. Through the RIGI and Super RIGI frameworks, Argentina is offering fiscal, exchange, and regulatory benefits to become a destination for artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.
