Data center energy demand drives solar and fuel cell innovation

Data centers are facing increasing pressure to manage rising electricity demands and carbon footprints as they account for a significant portion of global electricity consumption. To address these challenges, operators are exploring renewable energy solutions such as solar power. Integrating photovoltaic arrays with battery storage and smart-grid technologies allows facilities to utilize on-site generation to meet environmental mandates and reduce utility costs.

In the United States, the Electric Power Research Institute estimates that data center electricity consumption could rise from approximately 4% in 2023 to as much as 9% of annual generation by 2030. To mitigate this grid pressure, researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have developed a new catalyst design for low-temperature fuel cells. This breakthrough, published in Nature Nanotechnology, utilizes platinum nanoparticles to make fuel cells more powerful and durable, potentially providing a more efficient way to convert chemical energy from hydrogen into electricity for high-demand digital infrastructure.
