Data center expansion faces power and construction risks
The rapid expansion of data centers, driven by generative AI development, is facing significant construction and operational risks. Industry experts highlight that while hundreds of billions of dollars are expected to be invested in US data center infrastructure this decade, projects are increasingly vulnerable to delays and disputes.
Key challenges include power constraints, permitting difficulties, and local opposition. A major source of friction is the mismatch between data center power architecture and local grid stability. Research indicates that grid stress manifests in two forms: chronic and acute. Designing for the wrong type of stress can lead to rapid equipment degradation, operational outages, or stranded capital due to interconnection delays.
Furthermore, supply chain disruptions and evolving regulations regarding emissions are complicating efforts to secure reliable onsite power. For instance, developers attempting to pivot from diesel generators to fuel-cell solutions to meet regulatory standards may face substantial redesign costs and significant project delays.
