Data center expansion increases pressure on European power grids

The rapid expansion of data centers across Europe and the surrounding region is driving a significant increase in electricity demand. Energy experts suggest that rather than relying solely on expensive and slow-moving new infrastructure projects, the most effective immediate solution lies in the improved management of existing networks.

Digital solutions are being prioritized to optimize power transmission, reduce losses, and detect faults more quickly. By implementing predictive models and automated processes, energy companies aim to better manage the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources and minimize unexpected outages.

While dynamic electricity tariffs could encourage consumers to shift usage to off-peak hours, adoption remains low. Experts note that out of approximately 20 million electricity connection points, only about 40,000 are currently under dynamic tariff contracts, highlighting a need for better consumer education and more accessible digital tools.
