Data Center Industry Faces Power and Workforce Shortages

The rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers is creating unprecedented power demands, with some campuses requiring up to 10 GW—comparable to the electricity needs of a major city. Existing electrical grids cannot accommodate such jumps, leading to connection delays of five to twelve years in the United States. To bypass these bottlenecks, operators are turning to dedicated energy parks managed by independent power producers, combining gas, solar and other sources.

At the same time, the sector is grappling with a severe labor shortfall. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows a need for an additional 340,000 data‑center workers in the United States alone, a gap that widens globally as AI fuels new infrastructure builds. Companies are exploring under‑tapped talent pools, notably military veterans, who bring discipline and operational expertise.
