Data center infrastructure market expands amid AI growth and energy challenges

The global data center infrastructure market is experiencing significant growth driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and high-performance computing. The market for Top-of-Rack (TOR) switches is projected to grow from $4.49 billion in 2025 to $12.68 billion by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.9%. Similarly, the data center power system market is expected to rise from approximately $7.9 billion in 2025 to $21.77 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 14.3%.

This rapid industrial densification brings new challenges. Data centers are facing increased pressure on energy chains, with a rising number of documented electrical incidents and fires. The shift toward AI-driven workloads requires high-bandwidth, low-latency networking and advanced power solutions, such as high-voltage DC distribution and distributed energy storage.

While the energy consumption of AI data centers raises climate concerns, experts suggest the technology can also serve as a tool for environmental optimization. AI can improve the management of renewable energy grids by predicting weather patterns and optimizing electricity usage, potentially saving 13.5 exajoules of energy by 2035.
