Data Centers Confront Legionella Risks and Surging Energy Demands
Rapid growth in artificial intelligence is driving massive expansion of data centers, which in turn raises two critical challenges. Large‑scale cooling systems essential for preventing server overheating can create environments where Legionella bacteria thrive, making water safety assessments, regular monitoring and legal compliance a priority for operators.
At the same time, the power consumption of these facilities is set to soar. Forecasts suggest North American data‑center electricity use could double by 2027 and represent up to 12 % of U.S. electricity demand by 2030. Reducing this strain will require not only cleaner energy sources but also architectural shifts from always‑on models to reactive, demand‑driven designs that cut idle server waste.
