Data centers drive new natural gas demand in the US

The rapid expansion of data centers to support artificial intelligence is reshaping the United States energy market by driving a resurgence in natural gas investment. To meet the massive and immediate electricity needs of AI applications, major technology companies are seeking stable power sources.

Amazon is constructing a natural gas power plant in Texas, a project that could become one of the largest single sources of electricity-related emissions in the country. In Ohio, Nvidia is collaborating with SoftBank and the US federal government to develop a fossil fuel power plant to support a new OpenAI data center. Additionally, Microsoft is in negotiations with Chevron for a $7 billion project in Texas involving both data centers and natural gas power generation.
