Data centers face rising opposition despite economic impact

Data center expansion is facing increasing public and political opposition across the United States, particularly in Virginia. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, local communities have expressed concerns regarding environmental impacts, such as power consumption and water usage, as well as the disruption of small-town tranquility. A recent poll indicated a 13-point drop in support for data centers over the last six months.

However, economic data suggests significant local benefits. In Northern Virginia, the industry injected over $2 billion in local tax revenues in 2024. In Loudoun County, these tax receipts have helped lower residential property tax rates; without this revenue, homeowners might face an estimated $5,800 annual increase to maintain public services. The industry supports approximately 87,560 jobs and contributes $31.8 billion to the regional economy.

Analysts suggest that the tension stems from a need to modernize energy and fiscal policies rather than the facilities themselves. The resistance to data centers has also become a political flashpoint, often intersecting with broader anxieties regarding artificial intelligence and rapid technological change.
