AI demand drives global data center expansion and energy grid challenges
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in data center demand, creating significant infrastructure and energy challenges globally. In Poland, the data center market is scaling rapidly, with electricity requirements projected to reach 17–18 TWh annually by 2035. Additionally, the Polish semiconductor market is expected to grow significantly, potentially reaching nearly $24 billion by 2035.
In India, data center capacity is poised for substantial growth, with projections suggesting an increase from the current 2GW to between 12GW and 14GW by 2035. This expansion is creating diverse employment opportunities beyond traditional IT roles, spanning engineering, project management, and operations. KPMG estimates this sector could represent a $90 billion opportunity for the country.
In the United States, the AI boom is increasingly constrained by power grid capacity. Electricity demand from data centers is expected to rise sharply, with some forecasts suggesting U.S. demand could reach 108 gigawatts by 2030. This growth is putting pressure on power markets and raising concerns regarding grid reliability and the environmental impact of high water and electricity consumption. To address rising costs, some agreements have been made to ensure large technology companies bear the burden of increased electricity expenses rather than residential ratepayers.
