Data centre expansion faces environmental and community opposition

Global opposition to hyperscale data centre developments is intensifying due to concerns regarding electricity demand, water consumption, and environmental impacts. In Scotland, the Foundation for Gaia has urged the Scottish Government to implement binding resource-use limits and a national development strategy. This follows CX Tech’s proposal for a £16.5 billion, 1GW data centre campus near Chapelcross in Dumfries and Galloway, which would include eight buildings and significant infrastructure.

Similarly, Australia is experiencing significant community backlash. Property developer Goodman recently withdrew a $1.2 billion facility plan in Sydney’s Lane Cove following local opposition. Other projects in Tasmania and South Australia are also facing scrutiny. In Victoria, the Labor Premier has moved to ban data centres near sensitive sites. Experts warn that this social and regulatory pushback poses a risk to industry valuations and could lead to longer lead times and higher costs for AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
