Data privacy initiatives launched in India and Philippines

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a nationwide contest to design a mascot and name for the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023. The initiative aims to increase public awareness of data rights and obligations as the country enters the implementation phase of the legislation.

In the Philippines, discussions regarding the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA) highlight the responsibilities of Personal Information Controllers (PIC) and Processors (PIP). While the law regulates the collection and processing of sensitive personal information, data residency requirements generally do not mandate that all data be stored on local servers, except for specific top-secret or confidential classifications.
