Databricks acquires Row Zero to enhance AI data capabilities

Databricks has acquired Row Zero, an early-stage startup specializing in a cloud-based spreadsheet editor designed for massive datasets. The acquisition aims to integrate Row Zero’s capabilities into Genie, Databricks’ AI coworker, allowing users to interact with data through a familiar spreadsheet interface using natural-language prompts.

Row Zero distinguishes itself by its ability to handle up to one billion rows by running each spreadsheet in a dedicated Amazon EC2 instance, overcoming the performance limitations of traditional tools like Excel or Google Sheets. This integration is intended to provide a secure, governed environment where business analysts can explore and model data without the security risks associated with ungoverned spreadsheet exports.

This move is part of a broader acquisition strategy by Databricks, which has recently purchased several other startups, including Quotient AI, SiftD.ai, Panther, and Electric. CEO Ali Ghodsi indicated that the company intends to continue pursuing similar acquisitions to expand its AI and data management ecosystem.
