Dataworks defends industry ties amid debt and tax concerns
Dataworks, the firm responsible for maintaining Australia’s BetStop gambling self-exclusion register, is facing scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest and financial instability. The company is reportedly seeking cash to manage mounting debt and a missed tax bill to the Australian Taxation Office.
Concerns have been raised regarding director Ian Penrose, who holds simultaneous leadership roles in the wagering industry. Penrose serves as a senior independent director for the UK-based gambling technology company Playtech and is vice chairman of Weatherbys, a UK firm providing real-time horse racing data to betting companies.
Advocacy group Consumer Champion expressed alarm at the arrangement, noting that Penrose represents one-third of Dataworks’ three-person board. While critics argue these roles create a conflict with the mission of the BetStop register—which is designed to help problem gamblers by automatically closing accounts and halting marketing—Dataworks has defended Penrose, citing his extensive industry experience in regulated gaming and technology.
