Dates Offer Fiber, Potassium and Antioxidants, Study Finds

Dates provide natural sweetness along with significant nutritional benefits. A German health analysis notes that 100 g of dates contain about 270‑300 kcal, 7‑8 g of dietary fiber and high levels of minerals such as potassium (more than in bananas), magnesium, copper, iron, selenium and vitamin B6.

The fruit also supplies antioxidant plant compounds, including polyphenols and carotenoids, which may help reduce oxidative stress. Studies show that dates have a moderate to low glycemic index, meaning they raise blood‑sugar levels more slowly than refined sugar.

A 2024 meta‑analysis reported generally favorable effects of regular date consumption on blood‑glucose control, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in people with diabetes. The research emphasized that portion size and overall diet are decisive factors and that dates are not automatically unsuitable for diabetic diets.
